A cracking single malt that proves Islay isn’t the only place to get your hands on splendidly peaty whisky – the Tobermory distillers on the Isle of Mull also know their way around peated malt for sure. This is the 18 Year Old Ledaig single malt, which offers up hearty phenols, smoky herbs, cracked black pepper and balancing waves of Sherry-soaked fruit. Excellent stuff.
Aroma: smoke, rubber, sour milk and even some tar followed by fruity notes from apricots and dates, raisins and candied oranges. In
Mouth Feel: Nicely oily
Palate: sweet notes of the sherry cask come first: oranges, coffee, tobacco and even some red fruit. Then the peat takes over. Big development of smoke and loads of spices like pepper, nutmeg and salt. Midpalate it even becomes quite brackish.
Finish: long and warming, a tad smoky with loads of liquorice.
